Claude vs ChatGPT for business
Claude vs ChatGPT for a business, compared plan by plan for the owner who decides which company files go in.
The business plans on each side
Each company sells a plan for teams and a larger Enterprise plan. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025, according to OpenAI’s Business FAQ.
| Plan | Who the plan is for | What the plan adds |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Team | Teams of 2 to 150 people | Standard and Premium seats on one plan. A Premium seat gives five times the usage of a Standard seat. |
| ChatGPT Business | Teams of 2 to 200 people | Standard and Premium seats on one plan. A Premium seat gives five times the usage of a Standard seat, with no five-hour limit. |
| Claude Enterprise | Large businesses operating at scale | SCIM account provisioning, audit logs, a Compliance API, custom data retention, and role-based access |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Businesses operating at scale | SCIM, role-based access, custom data retention, and data residency in ten regions |

How each one charges
Both business plans charge a fee per seat each month, billed monthly or yearly. Each vendor lists the rates on the pricing page linked above.

| Use past the seat limit | Usage credits, bought ahead, billed at API rates, with a monthly spend limit | Workspace credits, within the spend controls that the workspace sets |

ChatGPT Business does not include the OpenAI API, which OpenAI bills separately. Claude Team includes monthly credits for the Claude API.

Neither vendor trains models on business-plan data by default. Anthropic does not use inputs or outputs from commercial plans, such as Team and Enterprise, according to Anthropic’s training article. OpenAI does not train on business data by default, according to OpenAI’s enterprise privacy page.
Feedback is the exception on both. Anthropic keeps a conversation sent with the thumbs up or down button for up to five years, and may use the feedback for training. Claude owners can turn the buttons off with the Rate chats setting. OpenAI may train on data that a customer opts in to share, for example through feedback.
By default, OpenAI does not train on data from connected apps either. Anthropic’s feedback records leave out the raw content of connectors, unless someone copies that content into the conversation.
How long each one keeps chats
On Claude Team, a chat stays in the account until a person deletes the chat. A deleted chat leaves the chat history at once and Anthropic’s back-end storage within 30 days, according to Anthropic’s retention article. Enterprise adds custom retention periods that owners set for the organization.
On ChatGPT Business, workspace admins can control how long data is kept. Deleted conversations leave OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, with exceptions for legal and safety reasons, according to OpenAI’s enterprise privacy page.
Admin access to chats differs. ChatGPT Business admins can view, export, and delete the conversations of workspace members. On Claude Team, the Primary Owner can request a data export, according to Anthropic’s roles article.
What an admin controls
| Control | Claude Team | ChatGPT Business |
|---|---|---|
| Single sign-on | Yes, set up by an Owner after domain verification | Yes, with SAML |
| Roles | Primary Owner, Owner, Admin, and User | Owner, admin, analytics viewer, and member |
| Who buys and removes seats | Owners | Owners |
| Connected apps | An Owner enables each connector, and each person then signs in to the connected service | Apps are on by default, and admins can change which apps the workspace allows |
| Usage reports | Usage analytics for Owners | Usage analytics and spend controls |
| Enterprise plan only | SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API, and role-based access | SCIM, the Compliance API, and role-based access |

Connecting company files and apps
Both plans connect to the tools that a business already runs. Claude Team connects to Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365, and Slack, according to Anthropic’s Team plan article. ChatGPT Business connects to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Microsoft 365, and more, according to OpenAI’s business pricing page.
Each assistant follows the permissions in the connected service. Claude inherits each person’s permissions from the service, according to Anthropic’s connectors guide. OpenAI says that ChatGPT respects existing permissions, and that each person signs in to a connected app before use.
Both also work inside Office files. Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word runs on every paid Claude plan. Claude for Outlook is in beta, according to Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 page. OpenAI offers ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets, ChatGPT for Word, and ChatGPT for PowerPoint, each in a sidebar.
For questions about the whole company, ChatGPT Business has Company Knowledge, a plugin that answers from connected sources. Claude Team includes enterprise search across Slack, Microsoft 365, and custom connectors. For the first steps on Claude, see How to use Claude at work.
Where each one stores data, including Canada
Anthropic stores Claude data in the US, according to Anthropic’s server location article. By default, Anthropic may route requests to the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia. On usage-based Enterprise plans, a US-only setting keeps processing in the United States.
OpenAI offers data residency to new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers. Canada is one of ten storage regions, so a new Enterprise workspace can keep conversations, files, and custom GPTs at rest in Canada.
Storage and processing are separate. OpenAI’s inference residency, which keeps model processing in the region, covers Europe, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. Data sent through apps and other integrations may be stored outside the region. OpenAI lists Enterprise and Edu as eligible for data residency, and Business is not on that list.
For records that have to stay in Canada on any plan, see private AI for business.
Which plan fits which business
A few facts about your business point to a specific plan on each side.
| If your business | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Has 151 to 200 people on the tool | Enterprise | Business, which takes up to 200 seats |
| Has to pay by invoice | Enterprise, bought through sales | Enterprise or Edu, bought through sales |
| Needs company data stored in Canada | No plan; Anthropic stores Claude data in the US | Enterprise, with data residency in Canada |
| Works in Word and Excel all day | Any paid plan, with the Office add-ins | Business, with ChatGPT for Word and ChatGPT for Excel |
| Needs audit logs or SCIM | Enterprise | Enterprise |
When both plans fit, try both on the same real task, with the people who would use the tool, before you buy seats for everyone.
When a company runs both
A company can give ChatGPT to one department and Claude to another, for example sales on one tool and estimating on the other. Each tool then needs separate settings for single sign-on, connectors, retention, and feedback. Each person who leaves has two accounts to close.
Write one AI policy that names which records go into which tool. For more vendors compared on how each charges and where data sits, see ChatGPT alternatives. For the Claude plans in detail, see Claude for business. For Microsoft’s assistant, see Claude vs Copilot.
How ThriveAI helps
ThriveAI teaches owners and managers to use AI on their own work, on Claude, ChatGPT, or both. Training runs on the attendee’s own tasks and documents. ThriveAI offers the training by video call, as a video course, or in person at the plant or office, in French or English.
Derik Lawlis leads every ThriveAI project. Derik plans and quotes each engagement separately, around the jobs chosen and the people who take part. For leadership teams, see AI training for executives.
