Tacton CPQ: what it does for manufacturers

Tacton CPQ is configure, price, quote software built for manufacturers of complex, configurable products, with design automation that generates CAD models and drawings. This guide covers the company, how its configuration engine works, what it connects to, and what moving an Excel builder into it involves.

Who Tacton is

Six scientists founded Tacton in 1998, with Ericsson as the only customer at the start, according to its about page. Its configuration technology predates its CPQ product by many years: Tacton names Metso (Neles) as its first CPQ customer, in 2016. Tacton now gives Stockholm and Chicago as headquarters, with offices in Karlsruhe, Warsaw and Tokyo. Klaus Andersen is CEO.

Ownership has changed twice. GRO Capital and Kirk Kapital invested in 2017, and in July 2023 they sold Tacton to Rubicon Technology Partners, with GRO’s third fund investing alongside. GRO describes Tacton’s move during its ownership from a consultancy-driven model to a pure software-as-a-service company.

On October 7, 2025, Tacton acquired Variantum and Serenytics. Variantum, from Espoo, Finland, sells configuration lifecycle management and configurable order fulfillment. Serenytics, from France, sells data visualization and analytics. Tacton says the combined platform runs from configuration and quoting through order fulfillment, installed base and analytics. That release names ABB, Daimler, MAN, Scania, Siemens and Yaskawa among Tacton’s customers.

How its configuration engine works

Tacton describes a constraint solver that validates every configuration. In a constraint model, product rules are stated as conditions the solver satisfies together, rather than formulas computed one after another. A spreadsheet works the other way: each cell computes from the cells before it. The difference matters when you move an Excel builder into Tacton, covered below.

Design automation and drawings

Tacton’s design automation applies the constraints defined in Tacton CPQ to the CAD model, so the generated design matches the configuration. It works with SOLIDWORKS, Autodesk Inventor and PTC Creo, and generates 2D drawings, 3D models and quote documents for each configured product.

Tacton’s customer stories put numbers on it. Tacton says MAN Truck & Bus cut engineering effort by 80 percent, and quotes Hilge saying tasks that took up to three days now take 10 to 15 minutes. These are Tacton’s figures, from its own page.

What it connects to

Tacton has announced a Salesforce app built for manufacturing. Ask Tacton which CRM and ERP connectors are standard for your systems, and which would be custom work. The connection to the ERP decides whether a configured product reaches production without being typed again.

Analyst position

Tacton says Gartner named it a Leader in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for CPQ Applications, its fourth year in a row, among 16 vendors evaluated. Its about page also lists a Leader position in a 2025 IDC MarketScape and inclusion in a Forrester Wave in the first quarter of 2025.

Who it fits

Tacton fits manufacturers of engineered, high-variance products that want sales configuration tied to CAD output, mostly mid-size and large companies, judging by the customers it names. It suits a company that already models its products in SOLIDWORKS, Inventor or Creo and wants drawings generated with every quote. Tacton publishes no prices on the pages reviewed for this guide.

Ask before you sign

Ask how many of your product families Tacton would model in the first phase, who on your side writes the constraints and builds the CAD templates, and how long the reference customers took to reach daily quoting.

Where your Excel builder logic goes

If your plant quotes today from an Excel builder, the workbook does not move into Tacton as it is:

That work takes engineering time from your team: someone who knows the product has to state it as constraints and templates. The public sources reviewed for this guide give no typical Tacton project length, so ask for reference customers of your size.

ThriveAI builds the second kind. For one product family, the first stage runs four weeks, from the first call to quotes in daily use. Before those four weeks, the first step is a free map of your Excel builder, with its rules and gaps. Converting an Excel quoting workbook into a web app explains how the app is checked against the workbook’s own results, and general arrangement drawings covers the drawing that goes out with a quote.

Questions people ask

What is Tacton CPQ?
Tacton CPQ is configure, price, quote software for manufacturers of complex, configurable products. A constraint solver validates each configuration, and design automation generates CAD models, drawings and quote documents from it.
Who owns Tacton?
Rubicon Technology Partners bought Tacton in July 2023, with GRO Capital’s third fund investing alongside. GRO Capital and Kirk Kapital had invested in 2017.
Does Tacton CPQ generate drawings?
Yes. Tacton’s design automation works with SOLIDWORKS, Autodesk Inventor and PTC Creo, and generates 2D drawings and 3D models for each configured product.
Does Tacton work with Salesforce?
Tacton has announced a Salesforce app built for manufacturing. Ask Tacton which connectors are standard for your CRM and ERP.
How much does Tacton CPQ cost?
Tacton does not publish prices on its site. Ask for a quote based on your product families, users and CAD needs, and for the cost of modeling your products.
What are the alternatives to Tacton CPQ?
Other CPQ tools with CAD automation include DriveWorks, Epicor CPQ and Configure One. CPQ tools for manufacturers groups the vendors by what they do. A plant whose rules already work in Excel can also turn the workbook into an app.
